 This past weekend, a very different kind of promotion for a new superhero film actually did convince some New Yorkers that human beings had taken to the skies.

What looked to be three people were spotted flying around the skies of lower Manhattan last Friday, causing a lot of double-takes and dropped jaws from onlookers.  But while it appeared to be a sight straight out of a comic book, it was actually a clever bit of viral marketing for this week's upcoming film "Chronicle."  Those aren't people in the air, but some very intricately designed radio-controlled airplanes.  Watch the video of their flight, and keep reading to learn how it was done. The movie tells the story of three high school students who discover they have superpowers, including the ability to fly.  To promote it, the studio called on Thinkmodo, a company that specializes in creating viral sensations.  They first made a splash with a video that seemed to show a man using an invention to hack into the video screens in Times Square.  It was later revealed to be a tie-in for the Bradley Cooper movie "Limitless," which went on to be a surprise hit.  For "Chronicle," though, the team had a different direction in mind.

Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul Break Silence on 'X Factor' Exits

It was a bloodbath Monday night as news broke that X Factor had let go of not only hostSteve Jones, but both female judges Nicole Scherzinger and Paula Abdul. Abdul released a statement Tuesday morning confirming the news followed by one from show creator and judge, Simon Cowell.

"Yes, it's true; I won't be returning to The X Factornext season,” Abdul states.

Moments after Abdul's statement hit, Cowell released his official statement. “"I want to say a massive thank you to Paula, Nicole and Steve for being part of The X Factor last year," he starts. 

“We had a lot of fun making the show together and importantly, we found some real talent and stars. You do develop friendships with the people you work with and Paula, in particular, is a very close friend and I expect to be working with her on another project in the near future. I'm sure all three are going to have massive success in what they do next , but now is the time to thank them all for everything they did last year."

The Hollywood Reporter uncovered the story of how Cowell fired his cohorts during a series of off-site meetings in the UK. According to a show insider, meetings are taking place wherein the show creator has assembled his team and creative brain-trust for a post-mortem. The purpose: detailing what went wrong and what was done right on season 1 of the Fox singing competition. 

Among the brash verdicts, says THR's source: That Abdul's role was seen as "irrelevant to the mix," in part through no fault of her own (as mentor to the groups, her contestants were picked off early in the competition).

Why the surprise post-season slaughter? Insiders point to an issue of both truth and perception: Ratings. While The X Factor's inaugural bow had numbers comparable to that of NBC's The Voice, X Factor was seen as a disappointment while The Voice was deemed a success. In a way, Cowell could only blame himself -- he was the one who set the bar extraordinarily high, telling THR in an August 2011 cover story that he was anticipating a viewership of 20 million. 

Coming in some 8 million viewers short meant lost ad revenue and diminished profits on what was already one of the most expensive productions on television. 

Also nagging at Cowell -- with just about everything he touches -- are the constant Idol comparisons and U.S. X Factor was no exception. But even with its over-the-top accoutrements of costumes, dancers and pyro, many from inside and outside the show's sphere felt it simply wasn't different enough, especially with the familiar image of Abdul at Cowell's side.

Common told Rolling Stone last week that he’s finished with the beef and Drake has had ample time to record a response if he felt the need to do so. I recently caught up with him while he was on the set of his video for “The Zone” with The Weeknd and asked him about another “controversial” line from “Stay Schemin”, whether we should expect a second Common response and if there was any truth to the rumor that he fired his entire staff.

So people want to know: will you respond to Common?
No. Because despite how it’s been worded by him that situation is not a “hip hop moment” or a “battle for the sake of musical integrity”…it’s a ploy for attention around the release of an album. More than anything it was just disappointing cause what kid isn’t a fan of what Common has done for our genre. A guy who made such an incredible career for himself based off expressing genuine feelings about life and love is now targeting me for sharing my story.

There’s a line from your “Stay Schemin” verse about Kobe’s soon to be ex-wife Vanessa that has gotten some negative attention. Can you speak to what you were trying to express with that line?
That line came from a conversation about being this young and making this much money and the fear of losing it all. I just used his potential situation to address my own life. I never intended to offend Vanessa or anyone else. That line had everything to do with me and what goes on in my head as a 25 year old man with this much income flowing in. Kobe is and always will be a friend and an icon to me.

Following the release of Take Care, rumors started to circulate that you had fired your entire staff, was there any truth to that?
No my team is stronger than ever and ready for 2012. I’m excited for what this year will bring.

What are your plans for OVO/XO?
OVO and XO will grow immensely both separately and together this year. The Weeknd is about to hit the road and come perform all that incredible music for his fans. I’m looking forward to piecing something together where we can share a stage and give people the full experience.

What’s next for you, besides the tour?
I have begun working on new music already and I’ll be recording during the whole college tour with 40. Making better music and building myself as a business is all that’s on my mind. Hopefully some acting as well.

This Past Weekend Draya (i have know idea what title to put in front of her name anymore), celebrated her bday at popular LA hotspot Greystone Manor. And yes it is the SAME club that Breezy and Rih Rih were spotted at and yes it was even the SAME night! Draya seemed to be confused over what celebrities she was actually partying with. For example, she was tweeting that Rihanna was there, but doesn't have not one single pic with her, and rihanna did not even mention any birthday wishes towards Draya on her twitter. Draya was making it seem as though all these big named celebs came for her, but I highly doubt Rih Rih showed for her bday or even knew. And I know damn well Chris didn't show up for her bday while bringing his current girlfriend.

Drake Rolls Up On LA Tattoo Artist, Issues Threats Of Violence

Last month, Drizzy made headlines when an LA woman hit up a tattoo shop to get his name inked across her forehead. To make matters worse, the tattoo artist who had the honor of tatting the chick up had some harsh words for Drake after all was said and done. He claimed in an interview, ‘I didn’t know who Drake was, I figured it was her hood or some sh*t, not some goofnugget R&B dude.’ and later called Drake, ‘the softest motherf*cker in hip hop’. Drake obviously didn’t appreciate those side swipes, and threatened in an interview,
‘‘F*ck you’ to that tattoo artist by the way because you’re an asshole for real. You should lose your job and never do tattoos again and I don’t f*ck with you and if I ever see you I’m going to f*ck you up.”

Well, it seems as though Drake may have stuck by his word…sort of. According to the tattoo artist, Drake rolled up on the tattoo shop and sent his security inside to let the tattoo guy know that he wasn’t playing. He wrote on his twitter:

Security guards were also reported to have been sighted outside the building, located off Park Avenue.

Beyonce revealed her pregnancy at August's 2011 MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles, arriving in a dress that showed off her baby bump.

Former bandmate Kelly Rowland appeared to let slip the baby's sex in a November interview, saying, "I have no idea what I'm going to buy Beyonce at the baby shower because Jay is going to buy that little girl every single thing possible. "We're trying to be as festive as possible under the circumstances but please keep Nick in your thoughts because this is very painful," she wrote, adding that they're stuck in Aspen for the time being. "The truth is as long as we're together, we're OK. I'm not trying to make light out of the situation because it's a serious moment that's very tough on all of us soplease keep us and our family in your prayers."

Carey and Cannon have been celebrating the holidays in Aspen with their children, Monroe and Moroccan.

"Paranormal Activity 3" played a key role in securing Paramount's spot as the top-earning studio of 2011, so when the studio casually unveiled plans for the next installment during their victory-lap press release, it almost went unnoticed.

"Paranormal 3," directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, took the series into the past, looking at what could be considered the series' origins story. While the story explained why the demon had such a liking for the sisters, Katie and Kristi, it left many of the questions from the modern-day "Paranormal 2" unanswered.

As for whether Joost and Schulman would return for a second round of directing, the team told MTV News they were open to it. "I had a blast. I'd do it again," Schulman said.

Joost joked that they'd take the series even further into the past. "We have some ideas. It's going to be just drawings — calligraphy and watercolors. And set in the 1800s."
